Grand Designs Live

Looking for inspiration for your home or garden project?

Head to Excel London, where Grand Designs Live is on from April 30 – May 8!
I’m working there again this year from May 3 – 5, and looking forward to it as always. So what exactly will I be doing for 3 days?

Well most of my time will be spent working on the ‘Ask an Expert’ stand, which has become a really popular feature of the show. Each day, a bunch of experts covering all aspects of build and renovation from design to finance and self build, are on hand for free 30 minute consultations with members of the public. A number of slots have been available to pre book in the couple of months running up to the show (they’re all booked now) and the rest are allocated on the day.

Usually homeowners arrive with plans, rough sketches or a few photos. The biggest challenge for me is to grasp as quickly as I can the nature of the plans, for a property I’ve never seen, and give people advice – all in 30 minutes! The fact I’m not familiar with their property can also be useful – sometimes I find myself pointing out potential improvements to layout that the homeowner hasn’t thought of, probably because they do know the space so well. I always encourage people to do a lot of planning and take their time to get it right – decisions made in haste can take a lot of effort (and money) to un-do.

The second thing I’ll be doing at Grand Designs Live is giving a talk in the Grand Interiors Theatre each day I’m there on ‘Top Tips for planning your build project for success”. Put together by the House Doctor Team, the talk gives our tips for making projects run more smoothly, and in the end cost less, as expensive mistakes are avoided.

The final thing I’ll be doing at the show – when my timetable allows – is enjoying seeing some of the many stands and gathering a bit of inspiration myself! Hope to see you there.

And if you can’t make the show this year, I’ll be posting some of my favourite finds on Instagram and Pinterest:
