Recycling is great – but Upcycling is even more fun!
Upcycling, or ‘creative reuse’ as it’s sometimes called, isn’t a new idea, in fact it’s just a modern name for a very old principle – making the best of what you already have. In the days before mass production, cheap imports and discount stores, home furnishings were often passed from one generation to the next. If something broke it was repaired, and if it couldn’t be repaired, any useable parts were re-used in other ways.
As more of us rebel against a ‘throw-away’ society and seek more individuality and creativity in our homes, up-cycling is increasing in popularity. It’s a fabulous way to express your own creativity, or support local artists and makers.
Our interior designer, Jeanette Mercer, has always been a ‘hands on’ type, and is now upcycling pieces, some of which are available for sale. For details of pieces currently for sale, please see our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/designsbyFresh
“I don’t work on valuable antiques – the pieces I’m trying to save are those pieces of wooden furniture that may be worn or dated in appearance, but are solid and have life left in them. There’s something immensely satisfying about taking some unloved item and giving it a new lease of life.”
